BMW X5 Protection: Weeks after unveiling the BMW i7 Protection, the German automaker has now teased another car that will come with the new Protection technology. BMW on Thursday teased the X5 Protection VR6, which is a heavily armoured vehicle and can withstand AK-47 Bullets and even explosions to some extent. The BMW X5 was launched earlier this year, and the Protection version, which is the bulletproof variant of the X5, will be launched at the 2023 Munich Motor Show scheduled for next month.

The BMW X5 Protection VR6 is very similar in terms of appearance when compared to the normal X5. The high-gloss Shadow Line BMW Individual roof rails, twin M bars in the front double kidney grille, high-gloss Black M mirror caps and the distinctive dual pairs of exhaust pipes from the M exhaust system give the X5 Protection VR a touch of sportiness.

The doors, side frame, roof and bulkhead of this vehicle are all fitted with moulded high-strength steel plates. Additionally, there is an aluminium underbody shrapnel protection and an armoured trunk partition. If rounds or shrapnel pierce the fuel tank, a unique casing can seal the holes to stop leaks.

The X5 Protection VR6 includes optional underbody armour and additional roof armour for greater protection and complies with VPAM ballistics regulations. According to BMW, the X5 Protection VR6 can endure 7.62x39mm (the AK-47's ammunition calibre) rounds. Additionally, it is capable of withstanding explosions that weigh around 32 kg of TNT when launched from a distance of about 12 metres.

Similar to its predecessor, the X5 Protection VR6 will be powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This combination usually generates an output of 523 bhp and 553 Nm but due to the extra weight that will be added to the vehicle because of the armour, the performance of the vehicle will be impacted. It is being claimed that it will be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and will boast a top speed of 210 km/h. The braking and suspension systems have been re-tuned to withstand the added weight from armour.

The X5 Protection VR's interior will include the new X5's 14.9-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch driver display. The X5 Protection VR6 is a five-seater and will have seats covered in Sensafin leather. The Protection VR6 will come equipped with certain special features like an intercom system for external communication, rear flashers, roof flashers with a horn system, optional LED flashers in the radiator grille, and a roof antenna with an extra receiver for digital radio.
